And now...
A Heart Hollow history lesson.
Many centuries ago, the town's grounds were separated by the two biggest families in the area. To the East, the Wright family focused on making ends meet with their stubborn resilience and unwavering attitude. And to the West, many folks with different surnames known as the "Heart Family Conglomerate" worked hard to make this mountainous valley their home.
While the Wrights focused on building commerce and job opportunities in this harsh mountainous land, the Hearts focused on community and folktale to keep spirits bright; needless to say, the two families butted heads when it came to ideals. A buffer zone was created to act as a place for trade and commerce between the two disputing lands. At the center, an ancient oak tree with a heart shaped hollow at the base of its trunk served as their symbol of peace and harmony.
During the nineteenth century, legend states that a great famine washed across the land, impacting both families' longevity. Despite the mass turmoil and loss, the two families refused to work together. Having lost his beloved wife Henrietta to the famine, a progressivist by the name of Hugh Heartwood was done with the disharmony. Heartbroken and distraught, he carries Henrietta's body to the Great Oak at the center of the two rivaling lands; in an act of protest, he buries her body within that heart shaped hollow. He proposes a truce in order to preserve both family's bloodlines and declares that these lands shall henceforth become the unified township of Heart Hollow, Pennsylvania.
By the twentieth century, the Heartwood family had only one piece of original family property left untouched. Up at the far West side of town, atop a steep slope, ninety acres of land overlooks the town below. Hugh Heartwood's descendant Wallace inherited the family land and decided to utilize the grounds for a grand Hotel & Resort. At the time, the townspeople were either highly in favor of the project, or heavily disputed it.
Yes, this little town's love for romance is the perfect backdrop for an atmospheric mountain getaway... However, these specific ninety-acres are locally known to be sacred. Through old wives' tales passed from generation to generation, the Heart Family told the story of Cupid: a divine buck with heart-shaped antlers that lives upon the property. It is thought that upon seeing him, one is either blessed with true love, or cursed with a lifetime of heartache.
Despite some of the town protesting, Wallace Heartwood moves forward with building Heart Hollow Hotel & Resort. The Resort opens to the public in the sixties and is met with great success from tourists and locals alike. For the locals, the Hotel's club The King of Hearts was a popular social spot. From Spring to Fall, the Resort's many outdoor activities made for an excellent day with loved ones.
Wallace Heartwood ran his business with remarkable leadership and poise. While his reign is often remembered as the Resort's golden years, things started to take a turn in the seventies. Rumors started to fly about Wallace's true intentions after he takes in a teenage girl, Hana Yang, and begins to mentor her on the hospitality business. To this day, people still speculate if there was some darker meaning behind the Hotel's construction.
In the late seventies, Wallace Heartwood disappears without a trace. The town is completely shaken up as people either mourn his disappearance, or celebrate that his supposed shadiness is out of Heart Hollow. The Heartwood family decides against continuing Wallace's legacy and agrees to let the Wright family purchase the land and the Resort that sits atop it. After switching hands, the Hotel & Resort finds itself owned and operated by a young Andrei Wright, the next heir to the Wright family fortune.
While Andrei ran the Resort, he entrusted Hana with the general manager position at the Hotel. Making sweeping design changes to the Resort, Andrei created a moody atmosphere that catered towards the Wright's local monopoly in liquor. Because of these design changes in the eighties, the Hotel & Resort experienced a second resurgence in popularity. While the Resort was always intended for adults, it now held a sultry, intimate air with late night parties held at the recently remodeled Club of Hearts.
While the Wright Reign started off successful, tourists and locals began to lose interest in the Hotel & Resort by the mid-nineties. By then, Andrei had stopped pouring money and resources into keeping the Hotel popular. One by one, the Resort's many amenities close down to preserve cash. Unable to keep up with the demands of money or time, the Hotel & Resort quickly falls out of fashion and into the depths of mismanagement as Hana resigns from her position. By the turn of the millennia, the Wright family pulls their deal to be the Hotel's sole supplier of alcohol. People begin to speculate: Andrei is the son to one of the wealthiest families in Heart Hollow... Why aren't they doing anything to help him out of this slump?
Today, Andrei both owns the Resort and manages the Hotel. Barely scraping by financially, the Hotel is the only building that remains open. While he spends most of his days cooped up in his office, Andrei puts most of the work onto his assistant manager Lewis Lockheart. Although the townspeople avoid the old Resort grounds, it's still a popular talking point amongst the locals. After all, the Hotel just gained a new employee, and the Heart Hollow natives are eager to see how he shakes up their ongoing story between the Hearts and the Wrights.
